The Winter/Spring Semester is here again to enjoy.  Registration details are above.  Please note that Final Registration this year is on Wednesday the 28th of January and not the Tuesday.

Our Courses are tailored to the questionnaires you filled in at last September’s Registration Day.  We do listen to you!  Exploring Your Dreams will tap into your imagination.  Cariboo History, Music Appreciation and Philosopher’s Café are back as requested.  Beginners’ Gardening promises to turn green thumbs to brown and Fly Tying and Fishing will turn the novice into an expert!  There is Water Colours with Wally and Beginning Guitar with Gordie.  And finally a new computer course: ‘Understanding and Using eBay’.

The free Community Service Lectures include ‘Coping with Chronic Disease’, a six session self management program to explore non-medical ways of coping with changed lives, ‘Estate Planning – A Primer for Seniors’ is open to anyone, members and non-members.  ‘Life Story Workshop’ will define oral history and the interview skills needed to help us preserve our precious memories.

Thompson Rivers University presents computer courses and digital camera instruction together with a special course devoted to Living on-Line in 2009.

A special thanks to our volunteers who make Elder College what it is. The Curriculum Committee is to be commended on the excellence of the syllabus offered. A special thanks is also extended to our Directors for the great job they have done this year.

Come to St. Andrew’s United Church, 1000 Huckvale Place, on, January 20, 2009, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for membership sign-up and course registration.  A brief overview of each course will be given at 1:30 pm and questions answered.  Membership is required to join courses. Courses to be filled on a first-come/first-serve basis following the brief presentations.  Fees to be paid by cash or cheque only.  Great refreshments available. Music Appreciation

Course Description:  Session 1: (April 27) “Music and the Human Spirit”- Research lately has confirmed what ancient wisdom tells us, and that is we are ‘hard wired’ to make and be involved in music. Dennis will play a selected list of music that has proven to inspire various cultures.
Session 2: (May 4) “A focus on instruments” - Musical instruments come in various shapes and sizes and all have their distinct qualities of sound. This session is designed to help listeners identify various instruments from various kinds of music, from pop to jazz to classical instrumentation.
Session 3: (May 11) “Music for the Occasion” – Music for centuries has been used to mark and enhance certain ceremonies, festivals, and events. Dennis will select from many of these events to amaze the listener.

Note:      Participants are encouraged to bring any DVD/video or CD to share music that is on the above themes or just music you love. We will be able to play cassette tapes, long play vinyl disks or CD’s in addition to DVD’s and VHS tapes.
Dennis tries to include other related topics like visual art, dance and philosophy in order to deepen the experience of listening to this music.

Course Leader:  Dennis Tupman has had a long distinguished career in the arts and music education as a teacher, clinician, seminar and retreat leader, lecturer, arts advocate, writer, adjudicator and speaker.  He has a novel approach to music in people’s lives.  He encompasses people’s souls and spirits in a holistic way as well as dealing with the technical aspects of performance.

Cariboo History

Course Description:  The “History of the Cariboo” as it has never been heard before. Here is an opportunity to get up close and personal and learn about many of our famous landmarks.

Session 1: (Feb. 9) Meet at the museum and visit with Liz Twain and find out about the History of the Alkali Lake Ranch.

Session 2: (Feb. 16) Visit the Little Red School House at 150 Mile and meet the infamous school master B.J. Sale. (Meet at the museum at 9:30 to car pool to 150 Mile)

Session 3: (Feb. 23) Jean will help you explore different aspects of the museum itself.

Session 4: (Date TBA) Lynnette Patenaude will host our group at the 153 Mile Store in May. The store is currently closed during the winter. This will be a very worthwhile wait in order to see what treasures are located in the old store.

Course Leader:  Jean Andersen is a long time resident of Williams Lake. She is a founding member of Elder College, and an active member of the Curriculum Committee as well as, an avid historian.

Fly Tying and Fishing

Course Description: Learn the art of fly fishing. Participants will also learn about rods, lines, reels and flies. Lessons will be done in fly tying and fly casting.

Course Leader: Paul Carnes has been an avid fisherman and fly tying enthusiast for most of his life. An educator in Williams Lake for the past 35 years, he was responsible for bringing the art of fly fishing to the curriculum committee of the local school board where it was introduced into the high school as a credit course. Recently retired, Paul has taken on contract work as a fly fishing guide and can alert you to some of the favourite fishing sites in and around the Cariboo.

Watercolours with Wally

Course Description: Basic watercolor painting concepts & techniques.  Develop your creative ability to record impressions of the world around you.  Experiment with a variety of watercolour painting techniques to practice the basic concepts of composition, value and colour in creating pictures.

Course Leader: Wally Chernoff graduated from the University of Victoria in 1969.  He is a seasoned teacher having taught art, graphic design and leatherwork at Williams Lake Junior Secondary and Williams Lake Secondary for 32 years.

Exploring Your Dreams

Course Description:  Dreaming isn’t just what happens during sleep; dreaming is waking up to sources of guidance, healing and creativity beyond the reach of the everyday mind. Our lives become richer and juicier when we learn to become active dreamers.
Active Dreaming goes beyond interpretation.  It guides us in fun and simple ways to tap into the energy and colour of the imagination, as well as offering practical guidance for living. Developing a relationship with your dreaming self is like inviting a wise friend, who knows every detail of your history and every corner of your heart, to walk with you. In this six-week adventure, we’ll learn the core techniques of Active Dreaming, an original method pioneered by Robert Moss.

Course Leader: Jenny Noble has studied this work for seven years and was among the first group of teachers to be certified.  She has lived and dreamed in the Cariboo for over 30 years, and has worked in silviculture, tended bar, and given Astrology and Tarot readings at the Hobbit House, as well as volunteering with many organizations.  She’s now the coordinator at Scout Island Nature Centre, and she wants to hear your dreams!

Gardening

Course Description: This course will help turn your gardening thumb from brown to green! District Agriculturalist, Ken Awmack, will provide ideas and practical suggestions from starting your seeds in the spring to pruning back your plants in the fall. Lesson topics include: container planting, greenhouses, organic gardening, bedding plants, flowers, landscaping, xeriscaping and pruning.

This course is spread out from February through to early May to coincide with your seed starting and early planting activities.

Ken Awmack is a Professional Agriculturist with over 20 years experience with the Ministry of Agriculture and gardening in the Cariboo and Bulkley Valley.

Philosophers’ Café

Course Description:  Philosophers’ Café will concern itself with some of the important ethical issues in our financially troubled times. This series will focus on the current economic downturn and its impact on society. There will be particular emphasis on those issues that are of special concern to elders. The instructor will come to the first session with a list of possible “ethical issues” for discussion; course participants may bring their own lists, and the group will make the decisions about the content of the six sessions. Guest speakers will be invited as the group decides.

Course Leader:  John Dressler is a retired educator with experience in a number of School Districts as well as SFU and UBC. The last 20 years of teaching was as a principal here in the Cariboo.

At Elder College, John has organized courses on the Canadian Novel, Amazing Women and Being Your Own Biographer as well as the seminar series called Philosophers’ Café. Each of these educational experiences has been as a sharing of knowledge, experience and wisdom. John is a Director for the W.L. Credit Union; and sits on a number of committees including the Social Responsibility Committee. He takes an interest in all causes that will affect the world of his grandchildren.

Beginning Guitar

Course Description:   This is a beginners’ session to learn how to play the guitar. Gordie will introduce you to the basics of chording, picking and strumming. You will learn how to tune a guitar as well as play at a basic level. This is a great opportunity to pick up some new songs and have a great time learning a musical instrument. The only prerequisite is having a guitar and be willing to have some fun.

Course Leader:  Gordie Helm is a recently retired administrator and teacher in S.D. #27, where he taught for over 35 years. He was a member of the renowned band “6 Men and a Fiddle” which played extensively around the Cariboo Chilcotin. He is avid guitarist, music lover and woodworker.

Understanding eBay

Course Description: Participants must have access to a computer and be comfortable with the Windows environment.  (There will be homework).  They must also have access to a digital camera and understand how to use it, including cropping and resizing of images.  This course will take you through the eBay world, from understanding the look and feel of the eBay auction site to selling and purchasing items.

Topics include:  registering on eBay, registering on Pay Pal, creating good passwords, the bidding process, things to do before you sell, how the auction works, completing the deal, paying for your purchases and communicating with the buyer. Upon completion of this course you should have a good working knowledge of eBay and be comfortable using it.

Course Leader: Harry Bell is recently retired from the Provincial Government and brings with him accounting and computing skills.  He enjoys sharing his knowledge with others and believes that learning is for life and that it should always be a fun experience

Life Story Workshop

Dates: Saturdays March 21st and 28th
Class Size: 12

Course Description: Everyone has a story. Oral history is the ‘systematic collection of living peoples’ testimony about their own experiences.’  Join us as we explore this fascinating way of preserving our precious memories. Everyone has a story: the key is to capture it in a useful form before it is forgotten.

This workshop will take place on two consecutive Saturdays. The first session will include introduction of course leaders and establishment of goals for the workshop. The first session will also define oral history, talk about why it is important and learn interview skills and techniques. The second day will focus on the mechanics of how to do an oral history including steps involved in planning a project, sample questions, legalities and how to organize the information once it has been collected.

Maureen Tickner: Former R.N. Administrator. Maureen has worked with seniors for 28 years, 17 of them at Cariboo Lodge. She served as Chair of Glen Arbor Committee to build affordable senior housing, is a member of the Health Advisory Committee, is the Liaison to Seniors Advisory Council, and is a volunteer seniors’ counselor.
Shirley-Pat Gale Shirley-Pat Gale M.ED. is the coordinator for the Partners in Assisted Learning Literacy Program at the WL Campus of TRU. She is also an instructor for the Weekend University Course. Shirley-Pat Gale taught English as a Second Language for four years in China and Japan, and prior to that was a figure skating coach.

Estate Planning - A Primer  For Seniors

Free and open to any member of the community interested in estate planning. Membership in the Cariboo Chilcotin Elder College is not a prerequisite for attending nor is there a minimum age.

This is a repeat of the popular presentation made last year by Jim Herperger. Many topics of Estate planning will be covered. These include probate, contesting a will, intestacy, estate planning, spousal trusts and discretionary trusts, power of attorney and representation agreements. Come prepared to have your questions answered.

Jim Herperger is a senior law partner in the firm of FH&P Lawyers in Kelowna and specializes in Elder Law and Estate Planning.
Since space is limited, pre-registration is a must. Registrations will be taken at the regular Elder College sign up in January or by phone (250 392-3978) after Feb. 9th.

Coping With Chronic Disease

Course Description: The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program is sponsored by the University of Victoria Centre on Aging. It is designed to help participants explore non-medical ways of coping with conditions that have changed their lives. The program includes a free book. The course leaders will guide participants on a journey of self-discovery during the six  2 ½ hour sessions.

Course LeadersMary Trott retired from the medical profession and the Radiology Department of the Cariboo Memorial Hospital in 2002.  She has been an active member of Elder College for the past three years belonging to the Curriculum Committee, as well as presenting and coordinating a number of courses.

Maureen Tickner is a former R.N. Administrator, who has worked with seniors for 28 years, 17 of them at Cariboo Lodge. She is a member of the Health Advisory Committee, is the Liaison to Seniors’ Advisory Council and is a volunteer seniors’ counselor.

Marilyn Rowe has made Williams Lake her home since 1992.  For the past 12 years she has worked for Interior Health as a mental health care worker and life skills teacher.  Her experiences both on the job and with chronic disease in her own family have convinced her that learning to manage chronic health care issues is crucial in maximizing ones quality of life.  Marilyn’s concern for people and enthusiasm for facilitation have motivated her to be a co-leader of this course.

Computing for the Baby Boomer Generation

Designed for the Baby Boomer generation, but open to everyone, this 15 hour course will introduce the student to the basics of computing.  Upon completion and with the combination of instructional support and practice hands on application, the learner will be able to manage his/her system effectively.  Topics covered include the following: the operating system, file management, common application software use and virus protection.

How to Use Your Digital Camera
Learn the basic functions of your digital camera and more.  In this 12 hour introductory course you will learn the parts of the digital camera, how to take digital pictures, save them on the computer and improve them in a number of ways.  Learn the differences between file size and tips for emailing those family images.  When registering, please state the camera you have and the program installed.
Prerequisite:  Windows File Management experience and/or one of the following: The Operating System, Nifty Fifties Basics, File Management Basics or Computing for the Baby Boomer Generation.

Living On-Line for Seniors

Designed for seniors, but open to everyone, this workshop will introduce the user to the possibilities of the World Wide Web.  Once you understand the basic functions of your computer and are willing to venture forward, you can begin “Living on-Line”  From researching to shopping, from emailing to web blogs, this course will take you into the electronic world where

communication is key.  Learn how to meet new people, share common interest, connect with distant relatives, email pictures and so much more. This 18 hour hands-on workshop will cover the importance of virus protection, firewalls, cookies, etc, as well as the nuisances of email spam, pop-up ads, hitchhikers, etc.
Prerequisite: Windows File Management Experience and/or one of the following:  The Operating System, Nifty Fifties Basics, File Management Basics or Computing for the Baby Boomer Generation.

Registration:

Please note –   If the course is full and your name is placed on a wait list, this is an expression of interest only – it is not a registration.  The wait list allows us to fill a vacancy and to determine whether the course should be offered in a subsequent semester.

Members should register for themselves whenever possible.  Should a member have to be away on registration day the member can ask another member to register their class or classes for them.  Only one proxy per member will be allowed. Mail course registrations will not be accepted.

Course Fees:

Course fees are $15.00 for courses of three sessions or less, and $25 for courses of four sessions or more   Fees have been established by the Executive Board, in consultation with the Finance and Curriculum Committees.

Cancellation Fees of 10% of the course fee shall be levied to cover administrative costs if notice to cancel is given at least seven (7) days prior to the beginning of the course.

Refund – If notice of cancellation is less than seven (7) days, course fees will not be refunded

Membership is open to anyone 50 years of age or older.

It offers:

Ø  An opportunity to participate in all Elder College courses, lectures and special events.

Ø  Privileges of Thompson Rivers University, including conditional use of its library, bookstore, and participation in many of the University sponsored events.

Cariboo Chilcotin Elder College is a volunteer organization committed to meeting the learning needs and educational interests of older adults in Williams Lake and surrounding areas.  Elder College will provide a relaxed, learning environment without grades or exams, based on a curriculum of particular interest to members.
