The following is a summary of courses offered for the 2008 Winter/Spring session. Membership sign-up and course registration for the over 50’s will take place on Jan. 20th 1:00 – 3:00 pm at St.. Andrews United Church, and on Jan. 28th, 1:00 – 3:00 pm. at the Seniors Activity Centre. Course fees are $25 for courses with four or more sessions, $15 for courses with three or less sessions.  Elder College Membership is required to register for all courses and lectures with the exception of the free Community Service Courses. 

On Jan. 13th there will be a membership sign up at the Seniors Activity Centre beginning at 1:00 pm.  Having your membership streamlines the process on registration day.  Membership is $10.

Music Appreciation – Mon. Apr 27, May 4, 11,
10:00 – 12:30 pm, St. Andrews United Church Library
Topics include “Music and the Human Spirit”, “Music for the Occasion” and “A focus on Instruments”. Learn how music impacts us as individuals, our ceremonies, festivals and special occasions.  You will also learn to identify various instruments.

Cariboo History – Mon. Feb. 9, 16, 23, May date TBA,
10:00 – 12 noon, Museum and site visits
The focus of this session is local history.  Learn the history of the  Alkali Lake Ranch, visit the 150 Mile School House, and the 153 Mile Store.

Fly Tying and Fishing – Wednesdays January 28, February 4, 11, March 18, 25 and April 1., 10:00 – 12 noon, TRU Room 1317
The art of fly fishing.  Learn about rods, lines, reels and flies, as well as how to tie fly’s and fly casting.

Watercolours with Wally - Wed. Apr 1, 8, 15, 22 ,29,
May 6, 9:30 –11:30 am, Seniors Activity Ctr. (downstairs)
Basic watercolor painting concepts and techniques.  Experiment with a variety of watercolour painting techniques to practice basic concepts of composition, value and colour.
 
Exploring Your Dreams – Wed. Mar. 4, 11, 18, 25,
Apr 1, 8, 1:00 – 3:00 pm, WL Library Meeting Rm.
Dreaming guides us in fun and simple ways to tap into the energy and colour of the imagination, as well as offering practical guidance for living.  Learn the core techniques of Active Dreaming.

Gardening – Thurs. Feb. 5, 19, Mar. 5, 19, Apr. 2, 16,
1:30 – 3:30 pm, Co-op Bldg. Room 116 (51 S. 4th Ave)
Practical advice for Cariboo gardeners.  Topics include: container planting, greenhouses, organic gardening, bedding plants, flowers, landscaping, xeriscaping and pruning.

Philosophers’ Café, Tues. Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24, Mar. 3, 10, 10:00 – 12 noon, WL Library Meeting Rm.
This session will concern itself with some of the important ethical issues in our financially troubled times. There will be particular emphasis on Issues of special concern to elders.

Beginning Guitar – Thur. Feb. 19, 26, Mar. 5, 12, 19, 26, 10:00 – 12:30 pm, Seniors Activity Centre
This is a beginners’ session in learning how to play the guitar.   Learn to tune a guitar, the basics of chording, picking and strumming .  Only prerequisite is having a guitar and having fun.

Understanding eBay – Tues. & Wed., Feb. 3,4,10,11,17,18 9:00 – 11:30 am, Seniors Activity Centre
Learn how to use eBay.  You must have access to a computer and be comfortable with the Window environment, as well as have access to a digital camera.


 



THE FOLLOWING IS A SERIES OF COMMUNITY SERVICE COURSES
These courses are offered to seniors at no cost. 

Life Story Workshop, March 21st and 28th. 1:00 – 3:00 pm
Everyone has a story, the key is to capture it in a useful form before it is forgotten. This course will help you to explore the fascinating way of preserving precious memories.

Estate Planning – A Primer for Seniors,
Feb. 28th, 10:00 – 12 noon
Many topics of estate planning will be covered including: probate, contesting a will, intestacy, estate planning, spousal trusts and discretionary trusts, power of attorney and representation agreements.  Pre-registration is a must. After January registration days call 392-3978 to register.

Coping with Chronic Disease – Mon. Mar. 23, 30,
Apr. 6, 13, 20, 27, 1:00 – 3:30 pm
The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program is sponsored by the University of Victoria Centre on Aging.  It is designed to help participants explore non-medical ways of coping with conditions that have changed their lives.

CComputing for the Baby Boomer Generation
Three sessions – Feb. 9-13, Feb. 21–Mar. 7, May 5 – 21
This course, designed for the Baby Boomer generation but open to everyone, provides an introduction to the basics of computing.  Topics covered include: operating system, file management, software use and virus protection.

How to Use Your Digital Camera
Three sessions – Feb. 3-12, Feb. 21- 22, Mar. 31-Apr. 9
Learn the basic functions of the digital camera and more.  Topics covered include: parts of the camera, taking pictures, how to save them on the computer, how to improve them, and how to email your pictures.

Living On-Line for Seniors! Three sessions – Feb. 23-Mar.4, Mar. 14-Apr. 4,
May 26-June 18
Designed for seniors, but open to everyone, this workshop will introduce the user to the possibilities of the World Wide Web.
